Memorial (Sun)Day Traditions

I can’t believe I actually did it! I’m getting my second post up, like I had planned! So, if you follow me on Instagram, you already know what I wore to church yesterday, but I wanted to share a little more with you about what we did after church…

When my husband was a little boy, his dad and grandpa would take him to tend the family graves after church on Memorial Day weekend. He valued this show of honor and respect, and we’ve continued this tradition in our own little family. For the past few years we’ve visited the local cemetery, after church, to walk along the graves of the fallen, and of those that had bravely served our country. It always opened up excellent conversation with our kiddos about what Memorial Day is about, and I’ve always been thankful we’ve done it. This year we did the same. Winding through, and stopping by each plot that proudly waved an American flag, we read the names, dates, and discovered which military branch they had served. The children were very interested in each life. Much different from past years, however, we were also able to visit the family graves that my husband had visited and tended when he was a boy – only this time, he visited, and tended his dad’s and grandpa’s graves, as well. They both died last year – just eight months apart. I didn’t include photos, but the children all sat quietly around their Grandpa’s grave, and each, of their own accord, laid their hands on his headstone. They did the same at their Great Grandma’s, Great Uncle’s (who was stillborn), and Great Grandpa’s family headstone. They were very sweet, tender moments. Sad, yes, but mostly thoughtful, reflective. We had the best conversations afterwards, and hugged each other a lot. It was a very good day of remembrance.

Ever thankful and grateful for all the brave men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our country, and ensuring our freedom. A tremendous debt that can never be repaid.

God bless.
