New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015 Style Guide

Wow. NYFW was absolutely amazing!!! I’ll have a much more personal post up tomorrow, but today, I am giving you the Spring/Summer 2015 comprehensive lowdown. I’ve broken everything down by top/bottom/shoe categories, as well as fabrics, textures, accessories, color combos, and even styling trends to try. When I say comprehensive, I very much mean that I need a table of contents for this post! It’s literally a style bible for spring. You’re most welcome.

In a nutshell, Spring 2015 is looking unflinchingly kick-A, athletic-sexy, so get excited!

TOPS:

Slim, meshy tank cuts are showing off those toned arms, while loose, boxy-tee shapes lend a casual-cool vibe; this mix is so indicative of next spring’s style.

The sweatshirt is continuing to mix things up in the traditionally tailored-and-polished world. Such a rebel, that sweatshirt.

Sporty Tops NYFW SS15 2

Crop tops are stayyyyyying, and come in all sorts of fun silhouettes. They’re still largely (and tastefully) paired with high-waists (just a few navels bared), so no need to stress.

Baseball jackets are the new moto jacket. They were seen eheheheheverywhere. It’s definitely the new “It Girl” in the jacket world. She plays very well during the day, and knows how to glam a party all night. She comes in all sorts of cuts (regular + cropped), prints, solids, and textures – you literally can’t go wrong, if you close your eyes and blindly pick one from a stack. There is even baseball-inspired detailing seen on tops and pants, alike – it’s omnipotent!

Varsity/Bomber Jackets

Evening, Casual, Preppy.

Not to be out-done by bombers, the vest had some major moments, as well. Its oversized, long length instantly adds a wonderful, effortless, sophistication to a look, making cropped, denim vests look like the ugly stepsister. This Cinderella piece was seen worn as a top, coat, and layering piece (even as a dress, as I point out later on).

Fit: oversized/long. Worn as a top, coat, or layering piece.

PANTS

Wide legs are backkk, and they are drapey, breezy, slightly slouchy, and gorge.

Wide Long NYFW SS15

Move over skinnies! Cropped wide legs are the new length and silhouette for spring…. They’re not the easiest to pull off in a flattering way, but find the right cut, and they’ll be your breezy-comfy, spring/summer go-to.

Told you spring 2015 was sporty! Jogger pants aren’t just for jogging anymore, Ma. They’re seen in suiting, day, and night wear. Just be sure to skip the frumpy terry/sweatshirt materials (unless very tailored, like Alexander Wang’s), and go for more polished materials like: silks, tweeds, or even sequins.

Joggers NYFW SS15

Oh, boy. Just the word “culottes” conjures a bitter taste in my mouth, but the ones I saw marching down runways were done so well, that I just might pop a peppermint and sport some, come warmer weather next year. Not so bad, at all….

Culottes

Designers left to right: Tibi, Tibi, Opening Ceremony, Jonathan Simkhai, Opening Ceremony, J.Crew, Alice + Olivia, Victoria Beckham, Elie Tahari.

While there was scarce a moto jacket to be seen, moto still popped up here and there in edgy details, as seen in Alexander Wang’s collection. Love the details on these pants, in particular.

Jumpsuits are still huge for spring, and got an airy, cropped, wide-leg update (some with peek-a-boo detailing, which I cover a bit, below).

SHOES

So, heels – especially strappy sandals – still abound in pretty much every designer’s line, but sporty flats are making a 90s comeback in a huge way. We’ve seen the ugly Birkenstock trend (still hurts my heart and my eyes), and while this trend is still sticking around, designers have thankfully made some pretty-ish updates to the ugly shoe (thank you, L.A.M.B., Kate Spade, and Oscar de la Renta!!). In addition to the updated Birkenstock, we also saw a plethora of slip-ons, sporty sandals, and tennis shoes. All of these sporty flats were paired with classic, tailored suiting, feminine, evening, and casual dresses/skirts, alike. They add a fun balance of casual-tomboy-ease, to the traditionally polished or feminine worlds.

While I love a good tomboy flat, I also love me some feminine heels, and there were plennnnty to choose from! As I mentioned, there was an abundance of strappy sandal-heels on the runways (J.Crew has some gorgeous ones), but as they’re kind of a staple, I chose to stick with showing you newer designs for this post. I am particularly loving the slip-on heels – I’m obsessed with that middle pair by Donna Karan!!

My preppy side loves that oxfords and loafers are still very relevant this coming spring, and I just wanted to show you some fun designs that I personally love. We’ve got the simple classics, and ones with really cool, edgy designs and details, like snakeskin and studs.

ACCESSORIES

Two things jumped out at me in the accessory realm. Statement belts (yay!), and talllll hats (umm, verdict is still out on that one). I’m crazy for these belts, though….

So, there are tall hats, and there are crazy tall hats. Chandeliers, watch your toes….

TEXTURES

If you’re not super trendy, like me, knowing and playing with of-the-moment textures (and color combos, for that matter) is a great way to stay current without trying too hard. Spring runways Brought It in the texture department.  Among the sea of varied textures, accordion pleats were making a statement everywhere, and in varied, beautiful ways. Skirts, dresses, vests, tops, satins, sweaters, sashes, micro, regular, and large; there was no shortage of its use in spring fashion.

Another texture that popped up on almost every single runway was a very sports-inspired mesh material. Shorts, dresses, tops, jackets, suiting, belts, detailing – you name it! It was perhaps the trendiest material I saw for spring.

Mesh

Designers left to right: J.Crew, Clover Canyon, Opening Ceremony, DKNY, Alexander Wang, Elie Tahari, Clover Canyon, Milly, Jonathan Simkhai.

Perforated Texture NYFW SS15

Eyelet was another texture/material that kept popping up here and there, in its quiet, understated, sweet way.

Eyelet

Eyelet NYFW SS15

Ooooo, it doesn’t get more dramatic and glam than metallic – especially when you are shoulders-to-toes in it! Whether you want to go bold in an entire dress of the slick, shiny stuff, or want to ease into it with just a skirt, some simple separates, or some cool accents, this daring material will definitely help you up your style game this spring.

Metallics

Designers left to right: Tess Giberson, Jenny Packham, Monique Lhuillier, Misha Nonoo, Clover Canyon, Christian Siriano, Pamella Roland, Monique Lhuillier.

Metallics NYFW SS15

Satin is another dominant material for spring. I know, mesh to satin; that pretty much sums up spring 2015! Tomboy meets Cinderella. Satin was seen in entire ensembles, and in separates – loving those trousers by Jason Wu!

Satin

Designers left to right: Christian Siriano, Jason Wu, Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren, Naeem Khan, Marc Jacobs, Nicholas K, Ralph Lauren.

Lace is definitely not new, but it was so gorgeous, I had to share! That first black-and-white Erin Fetherston dress – a Grace Kelly moment. #swoon

Designers always love a good sheer number it seems, and this season has loads to choose from…

Although I wouldn’t say it dominated runways, fringe was definitely a little fun guy that kept appearing in big and subtle ways. He definitely had some moments, and is making spring fresh and swishy.

PRINTS

While this fall seems to be all about bold graphics, spring is very spring with slightly more subdued florals and fun palm trees (and abstract prints in bright colors, although not shown).

CONTINUING TRENDING COLORS

Blush, Powder Blue, Scarlet, Lilac, Olive + Hunter Green, All-White, Navy, Orange
