Here in Louisville, Kentucky, we aren’t really considered either the “north” or “south,” but when it comes to this time of year, we are full-fledge southerners! We sip sweet tea on our front porches, wear large hats, pearls, and we love that the biggest horse race will soon unleash it’s brilliance!
It’s Kentucky Oaks/Derby time! We kick off a celebration for these races two weeks beforehand. How crazy is that?! This city is amazing outside of Derby events, but there is an extraordinary, 14-day, nonstop high we get when the horses come into town. I love the enthusiasm the Derby brings, but I honestly LOVE seeing what outfits/hats the men and women will showcase. It’s also about bringing our inner prep out into the open, and adding some necessary southern drama! 😉
If you’re going to the actual races and decide to wear a fascinator or hat, the hair needs to be simple! You’ll be at the track ALL day, so you’re not gonna wanna to fight with your hair. You’ll have so many things grabbing your attention – your hair shouldn’t be grabbing for it, too.
You can totally rock your hair tousled or lightly curled under that beautiful hat you have! Think of your hair as an accessory to your hat – it can only add to what you’re wearing.
Or be inspired by a vintage victory roll with soft curls! You can’t got wrong, promise. Check out the tutorial below to create this style yourself!
For those ladies who would rather have their hair out of the way, here are two classy updos with a head ornament. 😉
What a classic and breezy change of pace.
Grab a hat, a mint julep/oaks lilly, and join in on this party, whether it’s in front of a TV, computer, or here in Louisville! For the next two weeks we are all southerners
Happy Derby ya’ll.
